Oikopleura dioica
Interest
Zooplanktonic specie with a central role in marine trophic webs and vertical carbon cycle. Its study is relevant to impact of gene loss as an evolutionary force, and to better understand the origin and evolution of our own phylum, the chordates. Despite its cosmopolitan distribution and its apparent lack of morphological diversification, its variability on genome architecture among populations around the world may reveal the presence of many species that have been not noticed yet.
Distribution and origin of the sample
Cosmopolitan. Coast of Barcelona.
